Solar Farms reach 6.5% in Ireland

Ireland’s solar energy landscape has experienced significant advancements in 2025, with several large-scale solar farms becoming operational, contributing to the nation’s renewable energy goals.

Major Solar Farms Energised in 2025

Timahoe North Solar Farm – Co. Kildare

Launched in early 2025, the Timahoe North Solar Farm delivers 108 MWp of renewable energy, sufficient to power approximately 25,000 homes. This project marks the first collaboration between ESB and Bord na Móna under their solar co-development agreement. It is part of a broader initiative aiming to deliver up to 500 MW of solar capacity to support Ireland’s climate targets.

Bullstown Solar Farm – Co. Meath

ESB has energised its first wholly-owned utility-scale solar farm at Bullstown, Co. Meath. With a capacity of 8.42 MW, it generates enough clean electricity to power over 2,000 homes. This development aligns with ESB’s ambition to build out solar capacity by 2030.

Bord Gáis Energy’s Solar Offtake Agreements

Bord Gáis Energy has secured long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for four solar farms with a combined capacity of 350 MW, expected to be operational by 2025. These projects, located in counties Tipperary, Clare, and Offaly, will provide clean electricity to power approximately 100,000 homes annually, contributing to a reduction of 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.

EDF Renewables’ Solar Farms – Wexford and Kilkenny

EDF Renewables has energised its first three solar farms in Ireland: Curraghmartin, Blusheens, and Coolroe, located in Wexford and Kilkenny. These farms have a combined capacity of 17 MW and will power the equivalent of 6,600 homes.

Ireland’s Solar Capacity Milestones

As of mid-2025, Ireland has connected over 1.7 GW of solar capacity, with projections indicating a reach of 2 GW by September. Solar energy now meets 6.5% of Ireland’s electricity demand at peak times, supplying clean power to over 370,000 homes annually and avoiding approximately 395,877 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

What Next for Solar Ireland?

The momentum in Ireland’s solar energy sector continues to build, with several large-scale projects under construction:

Clonfad Solar Farm – Co. Westmeath: Developed by Statkraft, this 175 MW solar farm is set to be Ireland’s largest upon completion, featuring over 300,000 solar panels.

Ballinrea Solar Farm – Co. Cork: Owned by Ørsted, this 65 MW facility is expected to power up to 16,000 homes when operational later in 2025.

Ireland’s solar energy sector has made remarkable strides in 2025, with numerous large-scale projects coming online and contributing to the nation’s renewable energy targets. These developments not only bolster Ireland’s energy security but also play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices.
