There are a number of significant solar farms currently being developed in Ireland; that is they are either under construction, in development, or have received planning consent.
Here are just three projects of note.
Clonfad Solar Farm
As of January 2025, the largest solar farm currently under construction in Ireland is the Clonfad Solar Farm, located in County Westmeath. Developed by Statkraft, this substantial project boasts a capacity of 175 megawatts (MW).
The developers indicate the project is still under construction, and upon completion, it will feature over 300,000 solar panels, significantly contributing to Ireland’s renewable energy landscape.
Garreenleen Solar Farm
Another notable project is the Garreenleen Solar Farm near Carlow Town. Owned by Ørsted, this 160 MW project is designed to power approximately 29,000 homes once phase one is operational, and possibly up to 56,000 homes if the full project is realised.
This project began construction in 2024, with the development planned in two phases: the first phase of 81 MW is expected to become operational in 2026, followed by the second phase of 79 MW thereafter.
Lysaghtstown Solar Farm
Additionally, the Lysaghtstown Solar Farm in County Cork is under construction by Power Capital Renewable Energy. Covering 373 acres, this 131 MW project is anticipated to be operational this year, although still designated as ‘under construction’ by the developers.
These developments exemplify Ireland’s commitment to expanding it’s renewable energy infrastructure, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy sustainability.
