Ireland’s Electricity Winter Plan for 2024-2025 focuses on ensuring energy security, affordability, and sustainability during these colder months.
A key component of this plan is the provision of energy credits to alleviate household expenses. Over 2.2 million households will receive a double energy credit totalling €250, distributed in two instalments of €125 each — one between November 1 and December 31, 2024, and the other between January 1 and February 28, 2025.
These credits will be automatically applied to electricity accounts, benefiting all registered domestic customers, including those with Pay As You Go meters and vulnerable customers.

In addition to direct financial support, Electric Ireland has announced a 3% reduction in standard electricity and gas rates effective November 1, 2024. This marks the third decrease within a year, however despite these reductions, energy prices remain significantly higher than early 2021 levels, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the energy market.

The Winter Plan also emphasizes the importance of renewable energy in enhancing energy security and reducing emissions.
Ireland is progressing toward its target of achieving a 50% renewable energy share in electricity generation by 2025, with renewables accounting for 41% of electricity demand in 2023. To meet this goal, the plan includes accelerating the deployment of onshore wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, as well as reinforcing the electricity grid to accommodate increased renewable capacity.

Furthermore, the plan addresses the need for flexible gas generation to replace more carbon-intensive coal and oil generation, thereby contributing to emissions reductions. The integration of renewable gas into the grid is also highlighted as a crucial step toward ensuring a secure and sustainable electricity system.
Overall, Ireland’s Electricity Winter Plan for 2024-2025 represents a comprehensive approach to managing energy supply and demand during the winter months, balancing immediate consumer relief with long-term sustainability objectives.
