Are Sonnen Batteries the best on the market? It would seem so!

Sonnen have long been the byword for quality in the solar energy market, with batteries known to last longer, and with better warranties than almost every other manufacturer.

The energy storage market is already a big deal, and it’s only going to get bigger! Yet we sill need to apply common sense, and experience, when choosing our energy storage solutions which are not cheap to begin with.

We all have experiences of using Lithium-ion batteries in our phones, and how they melt away after a couple of years use. This is because Li-ion batteries have been around since the 1980’s, and have a very limited lifespan – something in the region of 400 – 1,200 cycles (just over 3 years at one cycle per day).

Li-ion batteries have their applications in consumer electronics and elsewhere but are otherwise limited by their lifetime and cost.

Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP)

A variation of Lithium batteries which have been with us since the 1990’s are Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries, LiFePo4, or LFP for short . These batteries are reputed to have a lifespan in the region of 2,750 – 12,000 cycles (almost 33 years of use at one cycle per day) … but Sonnen have smashed this ceiling.

Sonnen already leads the field in terms of warranty (10 years or 10,000 cycles), and recently released some tests from their battery laboratory in Germany where one of their batteries is clocking 28,000 cycles!! and still retains 65% power output.

28,000 cycles represents a whopping lifecycle of 77 years use at one cycle per day !!

Basically, Sonnen are announcing that their batteries will outlast most of us.

Now that’s quality!
